How to sign up for a Canvas account as a parent | Canvas

Overview

This is for parents who do not have a Canvas account and want to observe their students in their courses. Parents can sign up as an observer in Canvas. Observers can link their Canvas account to their student's account so they can see assignment due dates, announcements, and other course content. Observers can view the course content but cannot participate in the course.

In order to create a Canvas account, you will need the Canvas URL associated with the school where your student is enrolled. If you do not know your school's Canvas URL, contact your student's school.

1. Open Canvas URL: In a web browser, navigate to your school's Canvas URL (e.g., schoolname.instructure.com). If you're unsure of the URL, contact your student's school for assistance.

2. Click Courses.

3. Create Canvas Account: Look for the "Need a Canvas Account?" link on the login page and click on it.

4. Sign Up As a Parent (Free Account): Once on the sign-up page, click on the "Parents sign up here" link.

5. Enter Signup Details: Fill in the required information:

Your name in the "Your Name" field.
Your email in the "Your Email" field.
Choose a password and enter it in the "Password" field.
Re-enter your password for confirmation in the "Re-enter Password" field.
Enter the student pairing code provided by your student in the "Student Pairing Code" field.
Agree to the terms of use by checking the "You agree to the terms of use" checkbox.
Complete the Captcha form if required to confirm that you're not a robot.
Click the "Start Participating" button.

6. Begin Observing: Once your account is created and linked to your student, you can immediately begin observing your student's activity in Canvas.
